What does 'handicap' mean?

There is no clear-cut definition of the concept "handicap".

The common understanding of handicap is a physical, psychological or intellectual impairment that means that the relevant person has a compensatory requirement to be able to function as well as other people in a similar situation.

A more nuanced or dynamic definition is the environmental concept of disability, as defined in the UN's Standard Rules on Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. Here the term handicap is defined as an expression of loss or limitation of opportunities to participate in society on an equal footing with others. Handicap describes the relationship between people with disabilities and their surroundings. Disability - whether physical, psychological or intellectual - is the given, the objectively demonstrable, while a handicap is the relative - the situation-dependent.
